Instrumentation

The Instrumentation market is a broad market of technical expertise and capabilities. The following is how we categorize the instrumentation technical services.

Process Instrumentation Technician – has experience with process instrumentation such as pressure, temperature, level, flow, control valves, and analytical devices such as pH/ORP/Conductivity probes. A process instrumentation technician has the capabilities of installing, configuring, and commissioning these instruments.

Analyzer Technician – has experience with process analyzers such as CEMS, TDL, Gas Chromatograph Analyzers, and Liquid Analyzers. These technicians can install, commission, startup, troubleshoot, and maintain these sophisticated instruments and their associated packages, such as sample panels, testing manifolds, testing gases, and sample management systems.

Instrument Tube Technicians (Fitters) – has experience with installing, testing, and maintaining tube layouts for process instrumentation, control valves, and analytical systems along with their sample systems and testing systems.

Measurement Technicians – has experience with sophisticated process instrumentation and analytical instrumentation with regards to gas and liquid custody transfer and inventory management. The primary instrumentation for this service are Coriolis Flow Meters, Ultrasonic Flow Meters, Low Frequency Radar Level Gauges, Servo Electromechanical level gauges, Float and Tape Level Gauges. In addition to the measurement instrumentation, they will have experience with various type of flow computers, such as Totalflow, Spirit Flow, Omni Flow, and other flow computers alike. Also, these technicians will know how to manually gauge tanks for Level, Temperature, and retrieve samples and using testing equipment to verify media characteristics. These technicians are very detail oriented and thorough in documentation and verification of operations. These technicians will have experience with American Petroleum Institute (API) Committee On Petroleum Measurement (COPM) standards for liquids and gases, and the American Gas Association (AGA) measurement standards for gas. They should have a thorough understanding of Custody Transfer and/or Inventory Management programs for liquids and gas distribution systems.

Instrumentation Technical Resource Types

There are 3 types of Instrumentation Technical Resource Levels

  • Maintenance and Operations
  • Commissioning and Startup
  • Construction

Maintenance and Operations

Maintenance and Operations Technicians are technical resources that have the capabilities of maintaining instrumentation for daily operations and/or troubleshooting any sort of faults that are incurred during normal operations. These technical resources are capable of utilizing hand-held calibrators, calibration software systems, and multi-functional testing meters used to assist in troubleshooting process instrumentation and subsequently verifying their performance through the use of certified programs.

Commissioning and Startup

Commissioning and Startup Technicians are technical resources that can configure, calibrate, and setup process instrumentation for initial operations. These technical resources are deployed after construction is completed, and prior to the facility being turned over to full operations. These technicians can provide initial technical support to setup process instrumentation for initial startup and to make adjustments for proper process measurement and control. These technical resources are capable of utilizing hand-held calibrators, calibration software systems, and multi-functional testing meters used to assist in troubleshooting process instrumentation and subsequently verifying their performance through the use of certified programs.

Construction

Construction Technicians are technical resources that provide proper installation of Process Instrumentation for Brownfield and Greenfield projects. These technicians will mount process instrumentation onto the process piping systems and route conduit and wire to a junction point to accommodate system integration. These technical resources are normally not required to utilize hand-held calibrators, calibration software systems, and multi-functional testing meters used to assist in troubleshooting process instrumentation and subsequently verifying their performance through the use of certified programs. These technicians are primarily used for initial installation of process instrumentation.

Electrical

The Electrical technical resource market is more defined based on the vertical electrical market. Although they cross in many areas, there are specific attributes that are related more to their vertical markets such as Industrial (Petrochemical/Oil and Gas), Commercial (Commercial Building Operations), and Residential (Personal Homes and Neighborhoods). The following is how we categorize electrical technical services.

Electrical Power Technician – has experience with electrical power distribution systems. These technical resources are capable of maintaining and troubleshooting electrical power distribution systems, such as Protective Relays, Power Meters and Meters, Automation Controllers, Electrical Motors, Power Distribution Switchgear, and Motor Control Centers, and Racks. These technical resources are capable of utilizing hand-held calibrators, calibration software systems, and multi-functional testing meters used to assist in troubleshooting process instrumentation and subsequently verifying their performance through the use of certified programs.

Electrical Field Technician – has experience with installing and maintaining electrical cabling and cable support apparatuses for Brownfield and Greenfield projects. These technicians are cable of constructing and installing cable support systems for power distribution systems, in accordance to National Electrical Codes (NEC), or National Fire and Protection Association (NFPA) regulations and recommended practices. These technical resources are capable of utilizing hand-held calibrators, calibration software systems, and multi-functional testing meters used to assist in troubleshooting electrical cables, ground equipment, and electrical continuity of electrical power systems.

Electrical Panel Wiring Technicians– has experience with wiring electrical panels, field enclosures, and power distribution centers. These technical resources are capable of building power panels and power distribution systems for E-Houses or Power Distribution Centers. These technical resources are capable of utilizing hand-h

eld calibrators, calibration software systems, and multi-functional testing meters used to assist in assuring proper connectivity and continuity of electrical cable and wiring.

Control Systems

Control Systems technical resources will cross between Instrumentation and Electrical disciplines. The technical resource is more related to its application. A Control Systems Technician that is more associated with Instrumentation is known as a Process Control Systems Technician. A Control Systems Technician that is more associated with Electrical Power Controls is known as an Electrical Power Control Systems Technician

Process Control Technicians

Process Control Technicians can develop process control strategies for operations. They have experience with Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), Distributive Control Systems (DCS), and Human Machine Interfaces (HMI). They are capable of setting up Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems for process control. Process Control Technicians can program any PLC system as long as the conform to the IEC-61131-3 Standard for 5 programming languages. These technicians are capable of working with analog devices integrating them into a control system. They are experience with communications protocols, such as Serial Modbus, Modbus TCP, PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, and Powerlink, for high speed data transfers.

Power Control Technician

Electrical Power Control Technicians can develop power distribution monitoring and control systems. They have experience with power monitoring devices, power control relays, and remote terminal units (RTU) used to integrate power management systems. In addition, they are experienced in Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), Distributive Control Systems (DCS), and Human Machine Interfaces (HMI). They are capable of integrating power management systems up with Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems used for process control. Process Control Technicians can program any PLC system as long as the conform to the IEC-61131-3 Standard for 5 programming languages. They are experience with communications protocols, such as Serial Modbus, Modbus TCP, PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, and Powerlink, for high speed data transfers.
